#HipHop101 How much of my own money will I spend on making music?

download (40)

I’m so sick of folks out here acting absolutely crazy. I want to explain a very simple principle to you. First ask yourself this,

If you played little league…. Are you now a professional baseball player?

If you drew pictures in Art class….. Are you now a professional artist?

Should everyone that can carve a turkey be a surgeon?

Fam… just because the world has made it easy for you to make music, doesn’t make it your profession. It’s actually VERY disrespectful to those in the game that have suffered and clawed their way through being broke and all kinds of other things you have NO IDEA that await you in the music industry. Making music is a beautiful thing. I think everyone should experience its joy. It is OKAY for it to be a hobby. Too many people aren’t honest with themselves. Honestly Fam, let’s keep it real. There is music links circulated all over the net of some music that’s terrible. It’s not even recorded properly and it just wastes space in cyber space.

I don’t know who has been lying to you, but I’m going to tell you the TRUTH about what kind of money goes into funding your own music career. Incase you didn’t know, you will spend THOUSANDS of dollars on it and possibly NEVER make any back. You will give away music for the first few projects. Those projects will cost you money. Promoting those projects properly (which means you hire someone to promote you) cost money. The more you want it exposed, the more money it costs. If you don’t promote your project, you will not build a fan base. If you don’t have a fan base, who’s going to buy your music? If you buy downloads and followers… what happens when you put a song on iTunes? If you have 100k fake followers and can’t sell 2 Singles for $1… why on earth are you wasting time & money? There are THOUSANDS of other emcees JUST AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER then you. I’m not trying to be mean, this is REALITY. You should know exactly how big the mountain is.

images (86)

SOME OF THE WORST THINGS PEOPLE DO EVERYDAY:

Tweet strangers (people you don’t even follow) your links directly. They don’t click on it. You’re wasting time.

Tweet your music to famous people hoping they click it and love it. Let me know who get signed that way when you find out.

You are the only person promoting yourself. If you don’t invest in you, why would a label?

If you are still doing illegal things and your MXTP cover is your product, who is going to sign a law suit waiting to happen?

DISRESPECT THE DJ If you don’t know how important the DJ is? You are banned from making anymore music. It shows you researched NOTHING.

Get on social media and DISRESPECT the people that created the music of the game you’re trying to get into. NOBODY invests an artist who is disrespectful, immature, & unprofessional. You know why? THERE’S A MILLION MORE OUT THERE.

Not have help. There are a few (not many) folks in the music industry (myself included) that will not take your for a ride and rob you and actually give you what you pay for. What I’m telling you FOR FREE would cost you THOUSANDS of dollars to HOPEFULLY one day learn it from a Management or Development person.

Get mad when people don’t like your music. If this is you? You are banned from hip-hop. NOBODY likes everything. How dare you ask people to listen and when they tell you the truth, you get mad? You need to pay attention. Why? Because this is your BASELINE OF FEEDBACK. If 100 people listen to your song and anything over 80 say they didn’t like it? You need to seriously re-consider doing music or the kind of music you’re doing or accept that your fan base is going to be smaller then you anticipated.

Waste your money.

Not know what kind of rapper you are.

Hobby Rapper

Freestyle Rapper

Battle Rapper

MXTP KING

Feature Rapper

Indie Artist

Label Artist

Let me expound here a little bit… When asked “who is your fan base?” EVERYBODY is not an acceptable answer. Everybody would include kindergarten, middle school, high school, and senior citizens all in the same group.. In the words of Sneak Vandel,  “FALSE”. We’re going to get into this in depth in another article but it’s something you need to think about. I also want to give you a reality check about “getting signed”. In the words of Gryndhousz, “You have a better chance winning the lottery.” and that is 100% true. The days of getting signed to a major record label for a 50k advance and all that are long gone unless you are an artist ALREADY making money and numbers on your own that warrant such a deal. These days labels sign known artists or very young artists, they get a 100 page contract and lose all sense of ownership and identity to themselves as an artist. Make no mistake, anyone raking in the dough on the level you aspire for? Most of what you see come across in costume, dress, sound, etc is entirely dictated by the label that own’s the artist. We’ll visit that in depth in a future post.

Fam, this information would normally be contained in a development or management session. I am spilling FOR FREE what I use to eat & pay my bills with because in all honesty, I don’t want you stupid. If I know the way, it’s my job to share it. I don’t depend on any of you to buy services here, hit my blog, or buy our music. I depend on God. What most people don’t understand is that giving things away can get you credit at a bank you’ll never owe it back to. #ProphetTweet LOL Okay, back to business. Let’s start with something basic… Your first MixTape.

You want to drop your 1st MXTP

Studio Time: $35-$250 p/h depending upon where you go. You get what you pay for in most cases unless you happen to personally know somebody. If you don’t know the studio ask to hear some of their work!

15 Song MXTP: You should record a minimum of 25 songs to choose from. You should never just throw something together.

25 songs x $40 per hr for each song to record

25 songs x $40 per hr for each song mixed (bare minimum it’s more when it’s done 100% professionally)

If you want your tracks Mastered, it’s going to cost an additional $25 -$100 per song

Features: Well this depends on what kind of splash you’re trying to make on the scene. Let’s say the fan base you’re aiming for is Little Wayne’s fan base because for whatever reason he is your hip-hop hero. You should be aiming for those kind of sound features. Get Wayne out of your mind though unless you have a million dollar budget for this project because a 16-bar verse from him is going to cost you well over 50K. Your feature cost depends on the caliber of the artist. There are some you can get for $500-$1000 but nine times out of ten you have to know somebody that knows them to get that price, so plan on $1000 at least for each feature. If you’re having a well known underground artist feature, they may not charge you for the verse if they like the project but they will definitely charge you for their studio time which would roughly be $100.

Production: On a MXTP if you are using other people’s beats (aka “industry beats” beat from a song on the radio) this won’t cost you anything. If you have a friend or team member that makes them you’re still fine, but if want original music and don’t have anyone around that makes beats? You can tack on anywhere from $100 (for something decent)- 5k per beat depending on what kind you want & the caliber of the producer. So multiply 15 songs x $100 per beat and that’s another $1,500 on the bill.

Artwork: Decent underground artwork $30 -$100

Duplication: If you want hard CD’s, you’re looking at $250 off the rip (CD & Case) depending on how many you want and they are expensive. Sometimes 50 CD’s are $200.

Promotion: Typically, folks who make hard CD’s skip this step and just pass out CD’s which of course only reaches where YOU DO. Artists that are hip to social media should hire people to promote there.

If your MXTP is hosted by a DJ, add $100-$5, 000 depending on the status of the DJ

If you do an indie video, add $300-$500

Also add what you afforded for the song’s promotion again because the video also needs promotion.

Add in promotion costs for however long you plan to promote this project.

images (88)

You will do all this for FREE music. This music you are GIVING away. You have to build a fan base. Nobody is going to buy your music unless they know you or they just rock with you like that. Honestly, if you put out a song on iTunes today, how many people do you know for a fact would buy your single for $1? Count them times .70 (iTunes sells your track for $1 but you only make .70 off each single). That’s how much you’d make with no fans. It costs $10 to load it to iTunes so subtract that from that number. It costs roughly $100 to copywrite & publish the track so subtract another $100. Whatever you’re left with is what you’d make right now selling a piece of music with no fan base. Is your number positive or negative? You will more then likely do this kind of project at LEAST 2-3 times before you should even try to sell anything. Fam, if you are not willing to commit to that? You won’t make it. Some of us have lost EVERYTHING over our music. My team? In the words of @kinggeorge427 “We starved together, we’re going to eat together.” Anyone of the greats in hip-hop, went through most if not all of everything I mentioned. If you’re not prepared for battle, don’t try to be a soldier. We’re only hiring warriors in hip-hop for the next 5-10 years. But if you’re ready? Welcome to #OPERATIONREVOLUTION

Greetings –

It’s been awhile since I’ve updated the blog, but here I am!

Over the next week or so I’m going to post some back dated stuff that should have gone up already, so bare with me! Pretty much the entire month of April I was out of commission due to health reasons, and that was some scary stuff but by the grace of God all is well.

Having some in-hospital time really can pause you and cause you to change your perspective on a lot of things. For me this was the first time I was ever bed ridden and let me tell you, sitting still has never been a strength of mine (just ask any of my elementary school teachers) so this was entirely new for me. My situation also posed a set of challenges that most people don’t have to deal with. My significant other walks with a cane so naturally me being the primary caregiver in my home and being unable to do so scared me to death. I actually had to hit a point within myself during the hospital stay where I realized there were somethings I just did not and could not do anything about because of my circumstances and I had to just deal with it. Funny thing though, as soon as I got at peace with having no control over my situation, is when God stepped in.  I have got to say though, the grace of God is a beautiful thing. Grace is favor just because. Not because we deserve it or did anything special, just because. What looked like it was going to be a disaster actually worked in our favor! My Hunny learned how to become a lot more independent then before, I actually got some much needed rest, and some folks we least expected stepped in to help and overall? It was quite the experience.

So glad to be back though! Peace & Blessings to you & yours!

#Relationships101 Warning Signs by @queentheprophet

William_Li_Angel_of_War

This may be my first blog that turns into a slow rant yet a testimony. I saw something today that disturbed my spirit enough to write about it.

Today I happened to see a name fly through one of my social media pages that almost made me throw-up. My regular blog readers already know that I am a huge advocate for Domestic Violence, been trained as a DV counselor, and am also a DV survivor. I was married to someone for a very short period of time who was a childhood sweetheart and who also tried to kill me twice and one of the two times held me hostage for over 4-hours. Needless to say Fam, we live & we learn. The scary part is when people don’t learn.

So I saw this guy’s name fly through my news feed and what I saw made me sad. The kind of sad you get when you KNOW something terrible is going to come out of a situation.  I saw a young lady posting all these “Free so-n-so” and quoting lines that the above mentioned nut job has been using since he & I were kids, posting jail mail graffiti name drawings (his notorious jail calling card) Surprise, surprise he was also apparently in jail … which is really not a surprise because in the 20 years I’ve known him, that’s where he usually spends most of his time. The most sickening part was this young lady post statements like “after everything you’ve been through…” I just shook my head. The person she was speaking of has a publicly known track record for beating women bloody (which of course I found out too late obviously).

Here’s my question though, if you meet a new person and you catch wind of a DV history and multiple ones at that, does it ever occur to you that that’s a warning sign? Most people will play it off and blame a “crazy baby mother/father” which is fine and in some cases true. If you research statistics though, once someone has determined that communicating with violence in intimate relationships is okay, they do it to multiple people.

My Mother used to say “a leopard doesn’t change it’s spots”, I agree to a certain degree. I’m a believer that with God all things are possible and if I didn’t there wouldn’t be any hope for me either then because nobody is perfect. However, some folks ain’t livin right and aren’t even trying for that matter.  There are simple common sense things though that we should pay attention to.

Ladies & Gentlemen (because Lord knows there are plenty of men that get hit by women and not too many people address it, but it does happen and women can absolutely be abusive. 9 out of 10 times a victim of domestic violence that is in need of healing and doesn’t get it will then attach herself to a man she can control as a way of getting back the control that was stolen, just like men with a history of child abuse statistically often grow up to become abusers) if the person your dating has a history of domestic violence, investigate. It might save your life.

Be Blessed-

On Election Day {November 5, 2013} alongside the Million Mask March {you know, the Anonymous Mask March that actually happened in over 150 countries around the globe and had ZERO news coverage?}

Wu-Tang Clan Affiliate / Sunz of Man youngest member Hell Razah released a new series of his global movement GHETTO GOVT MXTPS. {United Hoods of America volumes 2 & 3 are available for free download via www.datpiff.com or http://www.wtcfolife.blogspot.com}  This series GHETTO GOVT USA (Under Seraphim Authority, Volume 1 hosted by Dj Yello) launched a commercial days before the release and to-date has surpassed the Dat Piff download/ stream numbers from the last 2.

Click to watch:

This MXTP includes industry heavy hitters like Hell Razah, Killah Priest, Timbo King (Wu-Tang Clan), Sadat X (Brand Nubian), and Young Nobel (Outlawz), Hell Razah Music, Inc. artists Kappo (aka Yung Razah/ GGO Chief of Staff), Scripture (GGO Attorney General), Automatik Greatness (GGO Secretary of Defense), Continuous (GGO Area 51), and of course yours truly, QTP (GGO 1st Lady).  This series though, did not have any outside guests. *Drum Roll* Now…. I want to give you my personal feedback on this last MXTP. This MXTP does not have commercials etc. and yes, true indeed does actually sound more like an album. There is some of everything on this MXTP really though, there’s a couple club bangers, some real hard core gritty tracks, battle rap, and most of all {what I am personally most proud of} is that most of the music on this MXTP is music with a message. There are several tracks with no profanity and fall more along the lines of conscious/ revolutionary/ spiritual hip-hop. When is the last time you heard a project that is not filled beginning to end with music you cringe because your kids are in the backseat? (Well I sorta take that back because not enough people care about what they feed into little ears but that’s a whole other article, back to the music).

#Relationships101 SOCIAL MEDIA DOES NOT DESTROY RELATIONSHIPS by @queentheprophet

social-media-friends

#RAWTRUTH101: Social media DOES NOT destroy relationships
We’re going to approach a topic that is widely debated. How many stories have we heard of people “finding out” folks are cheating via facebook, twitter… Fam, social media does NOT destroy relationships. Lack of self control does. Social media sites do not poison people, it only showcases what already exists. In a way, you should be thankful that you have such a wide open window into how the person you deal with actually behaves. This is not for the purpose of judgment, it’s just the way it is. The truth is, some folks are NOT relationship ready, and that’s okay. If you find out some crap they did on line, I know (trust me, I KNOW) how bad that hurts. Don’t let it kill you, here’s why… NOW YOU KNOW. Don’t beat yourself up because your heart hurts when you find out someone you love still struggles with self control, IT’S NOT YOU. You didn’t do anything wrong, at least you found out and keep it moving.

images (8)

You have to understand something, hurting people hurt other people. PERIOD. It will always be that way until the hurt person finds a way to un-hurt. If they don’t love them, they will never love you. Some people go bananas at all the sex being thrown around on the internet, they can’t handle it, and they overdose. Why are you crying? Let them be tears of joy that you’re smart enough to know that’s not how you want to be treated. There are some men and women in this world that are so scarred, they think behaving that way is fun & normal. If you can’t trust your mate on social media? That is not a person you should try to build anything meaningful with. They’re just not ready. For those of you in long distance relationships, the early signs of this are critical. We must all learn to gain wisdom from the things we KNOW. We have to stop ignoring things for what they truly are and just examine them in truth. Yes the truth hurts, but don’t you want it? Change your perspective… Give me the painful truth. I refuse to live a beautiful lie.

#Relationships101 Mistakes that women make by @queentheprophet

tumblr_mb83krkbnE1r9572l

Greetings Fam!

I wanted to talk about somethings that first & foremost I have done myself (See? Now nobody feels like I’m talking about them, I ALWAYS talk about myself first) and quite frankly, are issues I see all the time. I want to talk about them because these are the stupid things in life that cause big problems. So let’s chop it up about Mistakes WOMEN make in relationships.

images (5)

  • Make him pay for a heart he didn’t break:  If you are not over your last relationship, you are a selfish fool for getting into another one. Baggage has no place in a new relationship. When I say baggage, I’m not just talking about your ex. If you have messed up things unresolved with your father, if you are recovering from abuse and you did not get help? YOU BETTER if you ever hope to have a successful relationship.

download (10)

  • Running your mouth: Do you know Men HATE, HATE, HATE when their girl runs their mouth? There can’t be love without trust. If he can’t trust you to keep his secrets, then seriously what good are you as a partner? If you tell your friends something before you tell him? Did you ever stop and think about how that makes him feel?

download (8)

  • Double Standard: You can’t give anybody (let alone a man) invisible standards or double standards. Invisible Standard: You expect flowers on your birthday because they are important to you. You expect your partner to stay home with you every weekend.  (If you are the only person in your relationship that knows this, it is an invisible standard) Double Standard: You expect him to stay home with you every weekend until you have something fun to do with your other friends. You go through his phone but keep yours locked. (Double Standards. You’re setting him up because you switch up)

images (4)

  • Understanding: Your man is not a mind reader. Men are logic based thinkers and women are emotion based thinkers. Don’t “hint” at things, tell him exactly what you mean. Too many women get mad at men for just being men. Even if you leave several brochures laying around and stick a post-it on the fridge? He didn’t see it. He goes to the couch to sit, he’s not looking at the brochure on the table. If he’s at the fridge he is hungry and he’s not looking at the brochure taped to it. If you want to take a vacation, TELL HIM.

images (2)

  • The Counsel of your friends: Married women have no business hanging out with single women, point blank end of story. If you are a married woman and your closest friends are single? You are setting yourself up for a diaster anytime you start taking advice or counsel from single people.

If you are in a relationship and your friends are in the middle of a break-up? Please rememeber that misery loves company and even if it’s not on purpose? It can rub off and effect you.  Keep in mind “birds of a feather, flock together”. If you have a no good friend that’s always cheating everytime you two step out and that is who you CHOOSE to hang out with? It is a reflection of you somehow, someway, someday.

If you are serious, you need a person to help you & guide you. Teach you how to spend your money. Someone that has the contacts you need or knows how to get them. Management/ Artist Development cost money.

Get mad when people don’t like your music. If this is you? You are banned from hip-hop. NOBODY likes everything. How dare you ask people to listen and when they tell you the truth, you get mad? You need to pay attention. Why? Because this is your BASELINE OF FEEDBACK. If 100 people listen to your song and anything over 60 say they didn’t like it? You need to seriously re-consider doing music or the kind of music you’re doing. If you would like help? I will GLADY for FREE post your song with a poll box and people can crunk it or junk it.

Waste your money.

Not know what kind of rapper you are.

Watch the math:

You want to drop your 1st MXTP

Studio Time:               $30-$250 p/h depending upon where you go

15 Song MXTP:          You should record a minimum of 25-30 songs to choose from. You should never just throw something together.

25 songs x $30 per hr for each song to record

25 songs x $30 per hr for each song mixed (bare minimum it’s more when it’s done 100% professionally)

$750 + $750 = $1500

Artwork:                     Decent underground artwork $50 -$100

Duplication:                If you want hard CD’s, you’re looking at $200 off the rip (CD & Case) depending on how many you want and they are expensive. Sometimes 50 CD’s are $200.

Promotion:                  Typically, folks who make hard CD’s skip this step and just pass out CD’s which of course only reaches where YOU DO. Artists that are hip to social media should hire people to promote there. Battlegrownd Entertainment has resources we will GLADLY share with you. We can point you in the direction of indie folks WE use that give us great prices. We could start decent social media promotion to meet a $100 budget & up.

TOTAL LOWEST BALL PARK: $1850

If your MXTP is hosted by a DJ, add $200-$5,000 depending on the status of the DJ

If you do an indie video, add $300-$500

Want your video on World Star $750

Also add what you afforded for the song’s promotion again because the video also needs promotion.

Add in promotion costs for however long you plan to promote this project.

You will more then likely do this kind of project at LEAST 3-4 times before you should even try to sell anything. Fam, if you are not willing to commit to that? You won’t make it. Some of us have lostEVERYTHING over our music. Welcome to #OPERATIONREVOLUTION anything we can reasonably do to help, holla at us.

NEVER GIVE UP by @queentheprophet

Greetings Fam!

Peace and blessings. I want to talk about something that every person in the world needs to hear. Let’s talk about not giving up. Life can deal us all curve balls that we weren’t expecting and sometimes those curveballs come from our own karma. The thing that we forget most is that God is not a genie in a bottle. When you pray for things like faith, God does not wave a magic wand and boom you have faith. Situations which will allow you to test your faith and make your faith strong pop up.

When you have something in your heart that you can’t go a day without thinking about, never give up. It does not matter what it looks like on the outside. We as human beings are impatient. We want everything here and now, and when it doesn’t go the way WE THINK it should go, too often times we assume it’s not working. In actuality what appears to be a set-back is normally a set-up for something even greater if you hang on.

I have found (the hard way, because simply I am hardheaded… yea I know, I’m working on it) that in any of my tornado of situations, that how we are responding to the test is exactly what predicts the outcome of the reward. Think about it, have you ever been sorry in the long run that you took the high road in a situation as opposed to reacting in temporary emotion? Fam, people are mean, people lie on you, people are nasty, and I’m sorry but that is just a part of life. We cannot control other people, but we can absolutely control ourselves. If you allow it to anger you, it controls you.

If you lay down with pigs you’re gonna get dirty. You can’t be mad any anyone but yourself that you jumped in a pig pen. Too often times we forget to accept the personal responsibility in situations, even the ones that aren’t necessarily your fault. I’m going to share this with you, because quite honestly it’s the best exsample I can think of and if it helps one person? It was worth it. I got married in my early twenties and it was a disaster. I got married for all the wrong reasons. I was in church and I thought I was on my way to hell and I had to marry the person I was living with. That was one of the stupidest things to-date that I have ever done. The marriage ended in divorce and it wasn’t technically my fault because my former husband cheated on me continuously.

images (2)

Here’s the thing though, I got over it not because of divorce and not because years later I got an apology. I got over it because I learned that I played a part in it too. I got married for the wrong reasons. I knew my X-husband was a terrible boyfriend, and it was nobody’s fault but MINE that he was turned into a terrible husband. I knew full well what it was when I did it, I did it anyway. If you can get raw with yourself infront of the mirror and accept the part that you played and throw that pride in the trash? I promise that you will find yourself getting over things faster and healing. The evidence of healing is you stop talking about it every time somebody scratches that surface. If every time somebody puts a quarter in your slot and you start running your mouth? You’re not over it.

You can’t give up on things no matter how grim they may appear. FEAR= FALSE EVIDENCE APPEARING REAL. Don’t give up on love, don’t give up on life, don’t give up on your dreams, and NEVER give up on yourself.

Be Blessed –
