INDIE ARTISTS – Spend wisely COMMON UNDERGROUND MUSIC SCHEMES
Most of us have said or heard, “if it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense”. Same is true when you’re spending your money. Most people don’t like to waste money. Most people can’t afford to get robbed.
When you are an independent artist, you get robbed all the time. As much as we try to avoid this, people lose money all the time because there are people who will do or say anything just to make a few dollars. Here’s the SAD TRUTH…. these plots don’t impact the people who could recover from loosing $25 easily (not that ANYONE deserves to get robbed). These blood suckers take it from YOU. The struggling artist with a dream, scraping up your last to put your music out. They are aware of this. That’s why you are their target. You’re more likley to get mad and then just go away.
Some of the most common schemes in the underground music community:
- Mix tape Slots- There’s no MXTP. You pay pal a stranger $10-$25 and they BANK on you not ever suing them. Why would you? It’ll cost you more to track them down and take them to court. (Do this to 4 people X $25 you made $100)
- Promotion- Their followers, views, etc aren’t real. They’re bought. Then you pay $50 for tweets to fake people.
- The “Showcase”- Unless you personally know what the A & R reps at each record label look like (and you should, it’s on the internet most of the time) stop spending your money. You are paying to perform in front of other rappers in the same boat as you. If you don’t bring a crowd, your crowd is other rappers. 9 x out of 10 there is no prize, nobody gets the prize, and the “Showcase” is someone who worked at a radio station, has hook-ups at local clubs, and then charges you to perform in front of other people that paid to perform.
- “Tours”- The state to state tours. You again are paying to perform in front of other artists that paid to be there. Who do you know that was signed from a tour or a showcase? Seriously.
- “Verbal Contract” Anything done verbally is dangerous. Yes you can go to court with it, but you better have good supporting evidence (phone records, emails, receipts). Everything should be in writing. Keep a paper trail.
Don’t be stupid. Do your homework before you pay people to do something.
A real business person values their reputation and will provide you with an invoice detailing what you’re paying for. Nobody can promise you the moon, you can invest $10k into music promotion and if the music is bad, it is what it is and is the luck of the draw just like it is for everyone else. The best that you can hope for & do for yourself on a limited budget is find people who will give you what you pay for.

Check your baggage before boarding!
If you have ever traveled by airplane you know that your baggage is only allowed to weigh a certain amount or it will not be boarded. Some of your bags are too big to be carry-on’s and must be stored at another part of the plane while some bags you can carry on the plane. Both sets however, must meet the weight requirements. How much trouble would it save us if before we decided to date someone, we could put their soul on a spiritual baggage scale? We’d then know in a moment if this soul was too heavy to fly with.(BRAINFOOD… Pay attention)
Unfortunatley, lots of us move from relationship to relationship and never check our baggage before boarding. This often times results in us repeating the same cycle in relationships, often with similar patterns or problems. Checking your baggage can be a lengthy and painful process sometimes. Only you and God know what truly has formed your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions over the course of your life. It is not fair for you to get into a relationship with someone else without taking a self inventory of what you’re bringing to the table. Take a look at the list below and answer the following questions honestly.
- I have been a victim/witness/abuser of child abuse
- I have been a victim/witness/abuser of sexual abuse
- I have been a victim/ witness/abuser of domestic violence
- I have been married before
- I have been divorced
- I am legally separated
- I have no contact with any family
- I have been homeless
- I have experienced substance abuse either self or family
- I have experienced a horrific disaster natural or otherwise
- I have filed bankruptcy
- I have been incarcerated
- I have experienced trouble with the law self or immediate family
- I have been a victim/witness/abuser of spiritual abuse either by family or ministry
- I have been adopted
- I was raised in foster care
- I have an un-treated mental illness
- I was raised by family other than my peternal Mother and Father
- I was raised in a single parent home
- I have children and have never been married
- I have unresolved immediate family issues
All of us (including myself) have experienced these kinds of things in life. These kinds of things chart paths in our lives and sometimes leave lasting impressions. Relationships are most successful when the two people involved are both whole people on their own FIRST. Two half people don’t make two whole. We have to give ourselves permission to heal and ask for help sometimes. I point these things out because unhealed pain from those things can start growing weeds in every other area of your life. Give yourself permission to get to know yourself. It is so unfair to make another person pay for a heart they didn’t break. It’s mostly though, unfair to yourself. Life is short, it’s percious. Live it at it’s maximum capacity, especially in love.

Yung Co-Owner of Doberman Gang / Kennel Club Music is not only a brilliant emcee, but he’s has his own clothing line (ICARUS) as well as graphic design company. Yung also has many skills in just about every area of video and studio production you can think of. There is not an emcee to-date that has outshined George Yung on a track. If you are a true fan of REAL hip-hop, you will love George Yung (and more then likley the rest of the DBG).

People Pleasing by QTP
People Pleasing
Everyone claims to be so independent but in truth, they’re not. Most people are stuck in a highly contagious addiction called People Pleasing. There is a healthy form of People Pleasing then there is the kind that can rob you of your joy, peace, and in some cases folks hand over their entire self-worth. Nobody wants to be disliked, but let me clear something up (and anyone who tells you different is a liar) NOBODY likes EVERYBODY. Feel better? This is destructive to try and stay in everyone’s good graces to the point you eventually get so caught up in it that you lose yourself.
Everybody knows that one person that talks about EVERYBODY. Guess what? They talk about you. You see this kind of person has lost their own identity to the point that in order to avoid dealing with that, instead they keep a fully loaded clip of information about other people. The more information they offer about others, the less time they have for looking in the mirror. Don’t let people who operate like that bother you, pity them.
At the end of the day, you know right from wrong… don’t you? When you’re at a job, it’s healthy to “people please”. They pay you, do what you get paid for. That’s a safe form of people pleasing and it’s worth ethic. If you don’t do what you’re paid to do, then that’s an integrity issue that you have and has nothing to do with people pleasing.
No matter how wonderful your parents are, they messed up. Parenting doesn’t come with a handbook and NOBODY’S parents did everything the right way. I have seen folks at Grandparent status still twisted over what their parents think. I am in no way telling anyone to be disrespectful. I don’t care if your mother was a crack head, there is a parental line of respect and in lots of cases it ends there. Your life will never be your own if the opinion of other people define the choices you make. Anything you say or do has to be well with you. You are the only person that will grow or not grow, build or destroy, and you are the only person who has to deal with the choices & consequences of your life. They can impact other people, but ultimately they are yours.
Being able to set boundaries and limits is vital to your growth as an individual. Learning how to own yourself takes you to the next level in understanding. There are some situations where pushing past the past cannot be accomplished alone and you should seek help. In my opinion one of the most dangerous beliefs that currently circulates the earth is YOLO. You only live once. You only die once too. (We’re not going to argue reincarnation beliefs because they don’t apply. If you end up reincarnated you don’t come back the same… correct? Discussion closed.)
